My experience this week working on the research chart for this research class was a great tool to solidify the information presented in the course. We were instructed to list three terms from this week's resources that we weren't familiar with and define them in our own words. I wanted to list about 10 words and work with them so that I can refer back to the assignment when I need it. However, the instructions were explicit to list three terms.
I chose for my simulated research assignment to consider the probability of children in low-income families of having disabilities in cognitive development. Twenty-five percent of the children in the care of our facility have cognitive disabilities. Two of them have distinct autistic problems noticeable within a moment of being in their presence. I'm concerned whether cognitive disabilities have higher ratios of disabilities in this grouping.
Research can be extensive and costly. Are there any suggestions on how I could poll child care centers on a low budget?
Jayme,
ReplyDeleteGenerally, children from low-income households are deprived of a print rich environment as such they perform poorly on cognitive activities. However, to note that 25% of the children at your centre suffer from cognitive disabilities is certainly an area for great concern. I have no idea of the distance your centers are from each other and the time frame that may be allotted for this task, however, you probably can try to visit each center once and with the assistance of the teachers they can compile the data over the period of time. You may simply need to collect and continue the other aspects of the tasks. Hope I have been able to assist you.
Jayme,
ReplyDeleteI also agree that a great research approach for you will be to contact centers to acquire about their socioeconomic status. I would begin with the local centers within your town or county, but I would also venture into other parts of your state. Research to find out towns that have a high socioeconomics status verses those with low economic status. Compare the data collected from the centers with high and low socioeconomics. This is a great topic and one that is always heart breaking to see. I wish all children could be given the same opportunities for success.
